This paper introduces the science that underlies the engineering of safe edge protection for car parks. It covers both vehicle barriers and pedestrian safety fencing.
Developing from the basic scientific requirements for testing of edge protection, the paper identifies the additional constraints imposed on the vehicle restraint systems by car park geometry and design choices. It then describes test methods that can be used to prove that edge protection systems will perform adequately when accidental impacts occur.
