A number of years ago, the foresighted City of Basel identified the need to invest
into the future and to improve unbearable the conditions for pedestrians, private
and public traffic at the Centralbahnplatz. The idea passed successfully all
political obstacles and planning stages, the funds were allocated and the project
got started.
Besides the re-arranging of the tramway tracks and traffic lanes, the building of a
public underground car park, the pedestrian link to the central railway station,
there was another, smaller but nevertheless challenging problem to be resolved;
how to get the masses of wildly parked bicycles under control? How to stop
bicycle theft, how to improve pedestrian comfort, how to reduce the risk for
accidents, how to charge for bicycle parking and many more question were
raised

The short presentation on Park&Ride policy in Switzerland is structured as follows: I would like to start with an overview of some public parking policy trends in Switzerland. Afterwards, and as Park&Ride policies in the different Swiss urban areas are quite comparable, I will limit my presentation to one example of Park&Ride policy in Switzerland, namely the Park&Ride policy in the urban area of Bern.

This paper reviews and evaluates some major parking policies tried in recent years in Korea. Until the early-1980’s, in Korea parking policy lacked purpose and was unclear, most likely because of the relatively low levels of car ownership. Beginning in the mid-1980’s, however, parking problems emerged as a result of a surge in private car ownership. In response, policies targeted toward supplying parking spaces for commercial areas. Such policies are discussed in the first part of this paper. The second part of this paper discusses parking problems in residential areas.

The national government of The Netherlands formulated their zoning policy in 1990 using the motto,' the right business in the right place'. This policy can be seen as one of the mileposts in achieving the government's goal to reduce the growth of automobile use in the Netherlands. The foundation of this policy, called the 'ABC Policy' is based on co-ordinating characteristics of businesses with characteristics of the locations where those businesses may be found.
